Distributed collaborative engineering [1] is emerging as a new engineering paradigm that integrates dispersed engineers and their tools into a virtual team that develops a new complex heterogeneous product. Distributed design processes that are realized in a collaborative network [2] have numerous advantages and possibilities in situations where co-located collaboration isn’t feasible, like: - Grouping of diverse and dispersed experts into design teams. Experts need however to be supported in their collaboration by an integrated network of required tools, - Searching for required tools in the network and automatic tracking of changes in their specifications independently from their network location, - More effective administration of specialized tools, - Relative easiness of deploying new design technologies enabled by new tools due to proliferation of the Internet. Many R&D efforts have been undertaken in recent years that target various aspects of collaborative engineering [1, 4, 12]. The addressed aspects of this new paradigm of engineering work were among others: - Collaborative working environments with both synchronous and asynchronous communication among dispersed team members, - Interoperability of remote tools that often belong to different organizations [14], - Assurance of security in distributed collaboration being a critical requirement in industrial applications. The paper is organized as follows, after a short introduction to the problem of remote design tools integration; the main requirements on an integration environment are formulated. Provide explanations on XML-based description of design tools and their use in the Internet context. Distributed collaborative design - a case study for mixed-signal IP core

The paper presents application of a distributed collaborative approach to design of a mixed-signal electronic component. The approach is explained on an industrial case of the USB High Speed OTG Transceiver (PHY-physical layer) IP core design. Collaborative design style used by the distributed design team during two selected design phases, namely interface design specification, as well as distributed design and verification have been presented. This includes a distributed design workflow represented as a knowledge model and the workflow for remote tools invocation. Finally, pros and cons of the collaborative approach have been enumerated. Streszczenie. Artykuł prezentuje zastosowanie metod inżynierii rozproszonej do projektowania warstwy fizycznej szybkiego analogowo-cyfrowego układu USB. Nowe metody współpracy inżynierów w rozproszonych zespołach projektowych pokazano na przykładzie dwóch wybranych zadań projektowych, a mianowicie: specyfikacji interfejsu analogowo-cyfrowego oraz rozproszonej syntezy i weryfikacji. Zaprezentowano model wiedzy procesu projektowania oraz model procesu zdalnego uruchamiania narzędzi. Wskazano na zalety i ograniczenia metod inżynierii rozproszonej.
