Autonomous power source using photovoltaic panels and supercapacitors DOI:10.15199/13.2017.11.5

It has been widely accepted that access to electricity is a natural phenomenon, and in general this is true when cities or highly developed countries take into account. However, it is very easy to point out places in the world without access to electricity for various reasons. These are usually economic reasons, but in some cases technical problems may arise. For example, it is not easy to bring electricity to settlements in the mountains. The presented problems raised the idea of creating an autonomous energy source with an energy storage function. The device will be designed to power small devices such as weather stations (metering stations) or various types of signalers that can improve the comfort of living in a given area. Examples of such devices may be structures based on the ADuCM4050 microcontroller (current consumption in the active state is 40 μA/MHz [1]) and the RN2483 communication module (maximum current consumption at 3,3 V during transmission is 38,9 mA [2]). Projetct and design assumptions The basic technical parameters of the system are shown in Table 1. The purpose of the system is to process energy from the photovoltaic panel and stabilize the DC voltage of 5 V at the output. In addition, it is assumed that the power supply should have a backup function in case of power failure from photovoltaic panels. A. Main components of the system The energy source is the MF-20W photovoltaic panel. Dimensions of the panel are 505 x 353 x 28 mm. The energy storage is the BCAP3000P270K04 supercapacitor. It has capacity of 3000 F and its rated voltage is 2,7 V (Figure 1). It is a modern energy storage which is working in a much wider range of temperatures and aging much slower, compared to conventional batteries. B. A block diagram of the system The block diagram of the power supply is shown in Figure 2. At the input of the power supply there is a PV panel (PV Tabl. 1. System parameters Tab. 1. Currently, photovoltaic systems solutions consist of a single PV panel and a single converter or group of PV panels and a single converter. Taking into account mainly the improvement of the reliability of the solar system while, maintaining or even increasing the efficiency of energy conversion, a solution using a distributed system, i.e. separation of the PV on practically single cells (or a few) and coupling it with low power electronics converters is proposed in [1]. This approach requires very sophisticated controlling and refreshing the already known structures of inverters, but also the control algorithms. In addition, there will be considered option to implement in converters modern transistors based on gallium nitride (GaN) material. In this case, it is required to develop a new method of control of power devices in the structure of power converters [2]. The characteristics of GaN transistors let achieve a much higher switching frequency - in relation to Si or even SiC devices. However, at the present stage of the work low loss, ultra fast power MOSFETs are taking into account. The main goal of the research is to increase the reliability of the system and the resultant efficiency of the entire system, so that it could be achieved the greatest efficiency of converting solar energy into electricity. For this purpose mini converters with a total power equal to the power of a single photovoltaic panel to which, they are connected. Such a solution can increase the reliability of the system, because in the event of failure of one of the DC/DC converters or PV panels, the device can continue to operate with less power, and service of devices can take place at a convenient time, moreover converters operate sequentially with regard to their working conditions e.g. temperature, in order to achieve the operational wear to be uniform. In the studies will be verified the validity of the thesis that converters in distributed sys[...]
