Corrosion of electrodeposited nickel with graphene oxide and its effect on hydrogen evolution in water electrolysis DOI:10.15199/40.2019.7.1

  1. Introduction The role of hydrogen as an energy carrier will be growing with the increasing ecological requirements. At present, production of hydrogen by water electrolysis is much more expensive than that by combustion of natural gas or coal, however, it will be cheaper when renewable energy sources (wind, solar) will become more available. Pure electrolytic hydrogen has a special advantage for road transportation. Vehicles for hydrogen with fuel cells are now produced by several major car manufactures. Recent surveys on various technologies of water electrolysis (alkaline, PEM, high-temperature) are presented in [5,7,10,18]. One of the goals for large-scale use of water electrolysis involves development of highly-efficient cathodes, made of cheap and earth-abundant materials. In alkaline electrolysis the most widely used are cathodes of nickel and its alloys with Mo and, to a lesser extent, with Fe, W, Ti, Co, V, Cr, Zn [3,15]. Catalytic activity of these metals can be increased by addition of oxides of transition metals, such as oxides of nickel [2,17], of cobalt or iron [13], and of carbon. Carbon is widely used in energy technologies as a structural material with high electronic conductivity and as a catalyst support. High progress in its use in energy conversion and storage is associated with carbon nanomaterials. Recent developments in the use of carbon nanotubes, graphene family and carbon cloth/paper in electrolysis and hydrogen have been presented in [6]. Among catalyst-supporting materials an important role is played by graphene oxide (GO) and reduced GO (rGO) owing to their facile and low-cost formation. Catalytic efficiency of Ni/rGO strongly depends on its nanostructure [14]. In rGO, graphene is regarded to be the most active form of carbon [14], however, also GO itself can be a good supporting material. In [6] there are given references to 78 composites of electrocatalysts for HER on supporting carbon nanoma[...]
