Current experiences and lessons learned towards defining pan-European mobile network operator for research - based on EU project EuWireless1 DOI:10.15199/59.2019.6.5

  1. Intr oducti on Recent years have seen number of interesting developments in the area of spectrum sharing in both commercial [1][2] and research[3-6] domains, which enable new business models in the Mobile Network Operator (MNO) market. On the other hand, recent 5G developments are building on slicing across mobile networks [7][8][9] and research projects are working on improving slicing scalability and management structure. In the current research work on 5G techniques such as massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (mMIMO) and millimetre wave (mmWave), and with the most recent 5G-Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) projects which are addressing the need for different verticals to provide real life capabilities of 5G testbeds [10][11][12], the research results and developments in the field are very ambitious. Multitude of papers appear on slicing, novel Radio Resource Management (RRM) techniques for 5G and beyond, etc., often largely backed by the support of data analytics and machine learning [13]. Still, the same challenge remains actual for many recent years - “Are the most recent algorithms and research results implementable?", “Are they developed with the idea of truly deploying inside an eNB?". Even if the answer to these questions would be positive, it is not easy to validate such concepts in a real-life setup. In the last years European Commission has invested large funds to support creation of remotely available Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) experimentation facilities [14] [15] which have provided an unprecedented contribution to the research community. Many high-end devices such as specialized monitoring tools, base stations, data centres, etc., have been made available to researchers, Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and research institutions all over Europe and US [16][17] [18]. They were was earlier almost impossible to access without an internship or a European project funding. [...]
