Simulation of the cavities formation in solidifying castings


  An important aspect of foundry technology is to design a proper gating system that takes into account the appropriate arrangement and shape of the risers. On the one hand, such a system should guarantee to get casting free of defects, on the other hand it should be economical. This conflict can be especially seen in the design of risers. Simulations of solidification can be helpful in designing a suitable gating system. Unfortunately, it is inadequate to rely only on the simulation of temperature distribution in solidifying body. It is required to take properly into account the behavior of the liquid metal. The presented work refers to computer simulations of formation of cavities in solidifying castings. The proposed solution is based on the results of calculations of temperature distribution in the solidifying casting obtained by finite element method. Based on these results and the fact that domain of casting is discretized, it was possible to create a method that allows the user to find the location and size of the shrinkage cavity, taking into account the basic physical laws of liquid metal behavior. Robustness of the proposed solution is shown by examples of simulation for various shapes of castings. Results presented in the article are obtained from simulations, which take into account differences in the gating system. Impact of these differences on the predicted location of cavities is discussed in the text. Istotnym aspektem technologii odlewniczej jest zaprojektowanie prawidłowego układu wlewowego, uwzględniającego odpowiednie rozmieszczenie i kształt nadlewów. Z jednej strony układ taki powinien gwarantować uzyskanie odlewu pozbawionego wad, a z drugiej powinien charakteryzować się odpowiednią ekonomicznością. Tę sprzeczność widać zwłaszcza w projektowaniu nadlewów. Pomocą w zaprojektowaniu odpowiedniego układu mogą być symulacje krzepnięcia.
